The Court of Appeal has scheduled a hearing for the 15th to consider a writ petition seeking an order to hold elections for the Sri Lanka Rugby Union.
Former national rugby player Varuna de Silva filed the petition. The case was heard yesterday (30th) before the Appeals Court bench comprising Justices Mohamed Laffar Thahir and Priyantha Fernando.
President’s Counsel Faizer Mustapha, appearing on behalf of the petitioner, told the court that all arrangements had been made to hold the rugby elections on January 25th, in accordance with an agreement reached before the Colombo District Court. However, he pointed out that the elections were suspended following an order issued by the Director General of Sports, and that this amounted to contempt of court.
He further noted that this suspension had caused complications regarding the nominations submitted for the elections.
In response, Additional Solicitor General Sumathi Dharmawardena, appearing on behalf of the Attorney General, informed the court that a contempt of court case related to this matter is also scheduled to be heard on the 15th. Therefore, he requested that this petition be taken up on the same date.
Considering all submissions, the bench ordered the petition to be called on April 15 for further clarification.
