The annual conference of the Football Association of Sri Lanka concluded recently in Colombo. It was revealed that this year, under the decision to allocate up to one million rupees for each provincial league (61 in total), support will be provided for youth and sports club tournaments. Under this program, opportunities will be created for more than 15,000 players from villages to participate in football tournaments.
Accordingly, during this annual conference, the Football Association of Sri Lanka (FASL) approved an annual budget exceeding 930 million rupees. All 61 leagues affiliated with the association unanimously approved this decision, with all proposals receiving 100% votes, which is a special feature.
Referring to this conference, Mr. Jaswar Umar, President of the Football Association of Sri Lanka, highlighted that over the past two years, the Sri Lanka national team has been significantly strengthened and that the achievements attained in 2024 have been very favorable. “In 2024, the Sri Lanka team moved up 7 places in the FIFA World Rankings. This is the biggest rise achieved by any country in South Asia,” he stated.
In addition to the national team matches, the president mentioned that special measures will be taken to revive domestic tournaments.
