Sri Lankan athletes managed to win a record 9 gold medals and 6 silver medals in the South Asian Under-15 and Under-17 Regional Junior Badminton Championships. The number of Sri Lankan athletes who won 5 gold medals in the under-15 category in the championship tournament held recently at the Pakistan Sports Complex in Islamabad is 4 gold medals in the under-17 category.In addition, the Sri Lankan athletes also managed to win 2 silver medals in the under-15 category and 4 silver medals in the under-17 category.
In this championship, Sri Lankan athletes defeated Pakistan, Nepal and Maldivian athletes and reached the final 10 matches in the under-15 and under-17 categories of boys and girls singles and doubles in mixed doubles, and 5 of them were held by Sri Lankan athletes. Being in between is special.The Sri Lankan athletes won 4 of the remaining 5 finals, and the only final lost was the under-17 boys' doubles match.
Amawan Amarasinghe managed to defeat Pakistan's Abdul Haseeb with the score of 21-15 and 21-17 in the under-15 boys singles final, and in the girls singles final of the same age group between Sri Lankan players, the scores were 14-21, 21- Benuri Jananga Vidyathilaka defeated Tenuki Ayangsa de Silva by 13 points and 21-18. In the boys' doubles final, Amavan Amarasinghe and Chenal Devshan Madapatage defeated Pakistan's Shahzain Malik and Muhammad Rian 21-14 and 21-18, while the girls'in the doubles final, Tenuki Ayangsa de Silva and Benuri Jananga Vidyathilaka defeated Pakistan's Maham Ammad Zia and Romeza Faisal 21-7 and 21-8. Chenal Devshan Madapatage and Benuri Jananga Vidyathilaka lost to Amawan Amarasinghe and Tenuki Ayangsa de Silva in the mixed doubles final of the same age group between Sri Lankan athletes by 19-21, 21-5 and 21-15.
Mihila Jayaweera lost to Tejana Herath with the score of 21-19, 19-21 and 17-21 in the under-17 boys' singles final between Sri Lankan players, and Lukshana Kumar in the girls' singles final of the same age group among Sri Lankan players. Nethmi Ratnayake won by 21-17 and 21-12. Tejana Herath and Mihila Jayaweera beat Pakistan's Fahad Ahmed 21-18, 18-21, 21-19 in the boys' doubles final.and lost to Kuzeima Shahzad,'Lukshana Kumar and Nethmi Ratnayake defeated Pakistan's Roshanya Ihsan and Samha Naveed 21-9 and 21-7 in the girls' doubles final. In the mixed doubles final, Mihila Jayaweera and Nethmi Ratnayake defeated Tejana Herath and Lukshana Kumar by 21-17 and 21-13 respectively.
Amawan Amarasinghe in the under-15 competition division and Nethmi Ratnayake in the under-17 competition division managed to win triple championships.
