Recently, Umayanga Mihiran won the bronze medal in the 51 kg weight class at the Asian 'Elite' Boxing Championship in Thailand.

Accordingly, it became the first time since 1987 that a Sri Lankan athlete won a boxing medal in an Asian tournament. The last time L. J. Ratnasuriya won a bronze medal.
In the semi-finals of this tournament, Umayanga had to settle for the bronze medal after losing 30-27 to the Asian champion Azilbek Jalilov of Uzbekistan.
However, foreign commentators had introduced this match as the strongest match that Asilbek won in the Asian 'Elite' boxing tournament.
Umayanga, who studied at Nalanda College, Colombo, is currently the national champion in the 51 kg weight class.Moreover, it is also special that he has been the champion of every local tournament at the professional level since his school age.
