It is reported that the International Olympic Committee and the Asian Olympic Committee have decided to cut the funds given to the Sri Lanka Olympic Committee.
Accordingly, by sending a special letter, the International Olympic Committee has informed the Sri Lanka Olympic Committee that the ethical problems and internal conflicts of the Sri Lanka Olympic Committee led to this decision.
However, some officials were accused of misusing the funds of the Olympic Committee. It is also stated that the International Olympic Committee had recently informed the Sri Lanka Olympic Committee to suspend the position of the General Secretary of the National Olympic Committee with immediate effect, taking this situation into consideration.Accordingly, the Ethics Committee of the National Olympic Committee had also recommended that the concerned post should be banned and a special investigation should be conducted on the basis of an investigation report conducted by the Ministry of Sports..
But in the background that the Sri Lanka Olympic Committee did not give a positive response, the International Olympic Committee had informed the Sri Lanka Olympic Committee on November 5 to implement the recommendations of the Ethics Committee of the National Olympic Committee. It is also stated that the International Olympic Committee had taken steps to mention in the relevant letter that strict action will be taken against the Sri Lanka Olympic Committee if it fails to implement the related recommendations.
However, regarding the neglect of the facts mentioned in the relevant letter, the International Olympic Committee had recently sent another letter and informed that all the financial allocations given to the Sri Lanka Olympic Committee would be suspended. It was also stated in this second article that the Sri Lanka Olympic Committee has failed to resolve the internal conflicts and ethical issues within the Sri Lanka Olympic Committee.
The International Olympic Committee has also stated in the letter that the direct payments given to the athletes under the Olympic scholarship program will be implemented in the same way even if the allowances have been cut.
Accordingly, steps were taken to convene a special general meeting of the Sri Lanka Olympic Committee in order to discuss these matters and take the related steps. After considering the relevant matters, it has been decided to hold an election before the end of the term of office of the Executive Committee and appoint a new board of officers. It is also known that the General Assembly has decided to hold this office election before the month of March 2025.
