Sri Lanka's badminton champion Viren Nettasinghe won the gold medal in the singles division of the Bangladesh Open badminton tournament yesterday (21st) morning.
The men's final of the tournament, which was held at the Paltan Indoor Stadium in Dhaka, Bangladesh, was played between Viren and Shaydon Sheng of Canada. It was remarkable that Viren was able to win the match 2-0 easily.
After winning the first round with 21-17 points, Viren won the second round with 21-17 points and claimed the men's singles gold medal in the Yonex Bangladesh International Badminton Tournament.
In the quarter-finals of this tournament, Viren defeated Darrell Kivu of Malaysia and entered the semi-finals. Viren, who defeated Malaysia's Wayne Soon Cho in the round of 16, was also notable for defeating India's Ram Nagalingam in the round of 32.
Meanwhile, Isuri Attanayake and Sithu Mida Silva, who represented the women's doubles category in this tournament, won the bronze medal.
Bangladesh Badminton Association organized this tournament under the leadership of International Badminton Association. The presence of 228 athletes representing 24 countries is special.
