Trinity College Kandy were crowned Champions of the Under-19 Inter Schools Division One Tier ‘A’ Limited Overs Cricket tournament, when they beat Richmond College Galle by 41 runs (D/L method) on Friday at Thurstan Ground Colombo. Put into bat, Richmond were bundled out for 123 runs in 40 overs in a match reduced to 41 overs per side due to heavy showers in Colombo.
Richmond batters were never seen comfortable in the middle as the Trinitians bowled a good length and line to have them in a tight grip. Sharon Abhishek top scored for Richmond with a fighting 33, while Janeth Kaushal (28) and Thamindu Pradeeptha (19) chipped in with little cameos to give some respectability to their score. With wickets falling at regular interval Janeth Kaushal and Sharon Abhishek showed some resistance adding 34 runs for the 8th wicket, but the Richmondites were bowled out for below par score of 123 runs in 40.1 overs.
Theeraka Ranatunge was the pick of the bowlers claiming 3 wickets for 24 runs. In reply, it was a walk in the park for the Trinity lads as they raced to 109 runs for 4 wickets in 24 overs when bad light interrupted proceedings, and no play was possible thereafter. At the time Trinity was way ahead according to the D/L Method. Skipper Rahal Amarasinghe led from the front with a watchful 36 runs for Trinity. Youth cap Malsha Tharupathi (3/28) did his level best for the team, but his effort was in vain as it was too little too late for him to take his team over the line. The tournament was conducted by Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association and sponsored by Sri Lanka Cricket.
