It has been reported that former national cricketer Sachithra Senanayake has been indicted by the Attorney General before the Hambantota High Court.
The indictments have been filed under charges including offering proposals to a player to fix matches for monetary gain.
This legal action pertains to an incident that occurred during the 2020 Lanka Premier League cricket tournament. A spokesperson from the Attorney General’s Department stated that this is the first time a national-level cricketer in Sri Lanka has been prosecuted in court under charges of match-fixing under the Prevention of Sports-Related Corruption Act. Furthermore, it was noted that this is also the first instance in South Asia where a national-level cricketer has been prosecuted under criminal law on match-fixing allegations.
The charges relate to a proposal made by a third party to Tarindu Ratnayake, who was selected to play for the Colombo Kings during the Lanka Premier League matches held in Murugan Island and Hambantota between November 21 and 22, 2020. Sachithra Senanayake has been accused of failing to report the approach to the International Cricket Council’s Anti-Corruption Unit, of persuading the player to remain silent, and of giving relevant instructions regarding the fixing attempt.
The Attorney General has filed charges against Sachithra Senanayake under the Prevention of Sports-Related Corruption Act.
