The final match in the Super Six round of the Under-19 Women's Cricket World Cup was held today (29th) at the Bangui Stadium in Malaysia. Sri Lanka won the match against Australia by 12 runs.
The Sri Lankan team won the toss of the match and scored 99 runs by losing 8 wickets at the end of the scheduled 20 overs. The opening batsmen Sanjana Kavindi scored 19 points, Sumudu Nisansala scored 18 points, captain Manudi Nanayakkara scored 15 points and Hiruni Hansika scored 14 points.But it is special that no one, including the middle order batsmen who came to the field, could come close to the 10-run mark. For Australia, Lily Besingaigwith took 3 wickets and Tegan Williamson and Hazrat Gill took 2 wickets each.
Then the Australian team, who played the reply innings, scored only 87 runs after losing 8 wickets at the end of the scheduled 20 overs. Koimhe Bray scored 27 points and Elino LaRosa scored 18 points. In bowling, Chamudi Munasinghe, Pramudi Metsara and Aseni Talagune shared 2 wickets each.
The Nigerian team was able to win by 6 points in another Super Six round match between Nigeria and Ireland today (29th). Nigeria also defeated a strong New Zealand team in a preliminary round match.
However, by now the Sri Lankan team has left the tournament and the Australian team has qualified for the semi-final. The first match in which Sri Lanka participated in the preliminary round was against Scotland and that match had to be abandoned due to rain.If not for that disadvantage, there was a chance for the Sri Lankan team to qualify for the semi-final round of the tournament. The first semi-final match of the series will be played between South Africa and Australia and the second semi-final match between India and England the day after tomorrow (31st).The final match is scheduled to be held on February 2.
