At the end of the second day (18th) of the first Test between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, which is part of Sri Lanka's tour of Bangladesh, the home team found themselves in a commanding position. Due to poor light conditions, play had to be stopped, with Bangladesh on 484 runs for the loss of 9 wickets after 151 overs in their first innings.
At the start of day two, Bangladesh resumed their innings at 292/3. However, during the 6th over of the day, Angelo Mathews' brilliant fielding helped Asitha Fernando dismiss Najmul Hossain Shanto for 148 runs. At that point, Shanto and Mushfiqur Rahim had added 264 runs for the fourth wicket, which became the highest fourth-wicket partnership ever recorded at the Galle International Cricket Stadium.
After Shanto’s dismissal, Liton Das joined Mushfiqur and together they added a quick 149-run stand for the fifth wicket. During that time, several dropped catches and missed run-out opportunities by Sri Lanka helped Mushfiqur to reach his 12th Test century, while Liton Das managed to score his 18th Test half-century.
After lunch, rain interrupted play in the 130th over of the innings. When play resumed around 4:30 PM, Bangladesh had reached 458 runs. Asitha Fernando then managed to dismiss Mushfiqur Rahim for 163 after a wicketkeeping error. Liton Das attempted a reverse sweep off a delivery from Tharindu Ratnayake, only to give a top edge straight into the gloves of wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis, getting out for 90 runs.
Jaykar Ali was dismissed for 8 runs by Milan Ratnayake, who also removed Najmul Islam for 6 runs. Nayeem Hasan was the final wicket to fall, scoring 11 runs.
For Sri Lanka, Milan Ratnayake, Asitha Fernando, and Tharindu Ratnayake each claimed 3 wickets. However, Sri Lanka's lead spinner Prabath Jayasuriya bowled 48 overs, conceding 154 runs without taking a wicket — a noticeable underperformance.
The match is being held at the Galle International Cricket Stadium. After winning the toss, Bangladesh’s captain opted to bat first, a decision that paid off. However, opener Anamul Haque was dismissed for a duck, while Shadman Islam and Mominul Haque managed 14 and 29 runs respectively.
