Mahela Jayawardena, the consultant coach of the Sri Lankan team, said that they feel sorry that the Sri Lankan team was not able to enter the semi-finals despite their performance in the Twenty20 World Cup, and the players should take responsibility for the personal behavior of them. He expressed these views while speaking to the media when he arrived in Sri Lanka from Katunayake Bandaranaike International Airport along with the Sri Lankan team.

Mahela said further about the T20 World Cup tournament, 'Even though the team is among the best talents, we are not being able to enter the semi-finals. Although there were best performances in most of the matches, we made mistakes in the important matches. It is difficult to win by making mistakes and shortcomings when competing against the best teams in a tournament like this.'

Also, the Sri Lankan consultant coach, who commented on the mistakes and shortcomings of the Sri Lankan players in this tournament, said, 'Even though they entered well in every match, they did not maintain that condition throughout the match. I think that's why we played well and lost in the challenging matches against Australia, New Zealand and England. We had the chance to win in all three matches. We were unable to win those matches due to mistakes made in batting, bowling and fielding.'

Mahela Jayawardena also commented on the incident related to Dhanushka Gunathilaka, 'I think it is a very sad matter. We came to know about this the night after the final match we faced. The next day we had to leave Australia, so we didn't know much about the incident. We only know the details published in the media. But players must take responsibility for the personal behavior of the players. It is difficult for us to say what has really happened. We should give him that opportunity too. Because when we usually go as a group, we try to behave well as much as possible in those countries and come back to Sri Lanka. In such a situation, it is sad that such mistakes happen on the part of the players. This is not the first time such things have happened to professional athletes. Many such things have happened to professional athletes in other countries of the world. We do not participate in such tournaments with school players. As professional athletes, they are responsible for their behavior and the decisions they make.'

The Sri Lankan team arrived here in two teams from Australia and the captain Dasun Shanaka, who came with the second team, said the following while commenting on Dhanushka Gunathilake. 'We do not know the true situation here. As this matter is in the court, it will be answered soon.'

It is also reported that the Sports Ministry has already held discussions with various parties regarding how to deal with this situation. According to this, even though Sri Lanka has suffered a lot of scandal due to this incident, as Dhanushka is currently only a suspect, plans have been made together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to provide him with any necessary support. It is also reported that if he is found guilty, he will face severe punishments.
