Sri Lanka's upcoming tour of Bangladesh is set to begin on June 17, featuring a two-match Test series. Reports suggest that Sri Lanka Cricket’s Selection Committee is planning to introduce new players into the squad for this series.

According to cricket sources, two debutants are likely to be included in the Test lineup. This comes in the wake of two veterans – former Test opener Dimuth Karunaratne and ex-captain Angelo Mathews – officially announcing their retirement from Test cricket, with the first Test against Bangladesh serving as their farewell match.

This transition paves the way for the inclusion of fresh talent, especially in the middle order. The selectors are reportedly eyeing the possibility of bringing in one or two new all-format middle-order batters to the squad.

In the recent Test series against Australia, Lahiru Udara and Sonal Dinusha were named in the squad but didn’t make it to the playing XI. With this new opportunity, both players are expected to get more chances to prove themselves.

  • Lahiru Udara, 31, has amassed 7,305 runs in 105 first-class matches, marking him as a consistent performer at the domestic level.

  • Sonal Dinusha, 24, a left-handed batsman and a part-time bowler, has scored 2,478 runs and taken 99 wickets in 48 first-class games, showcasing his all-round capabilities.

Additionally, attention is being paid to Pasindu Suriyabandara (25) and Pawan Ratnayake (22) as potential inclusions in the national squad.

The first Test match will be held at the Galle International Stadium from June 17 to 21, while the second Test is scheduled for June 25 to 29 at SSC Ground in Colombo.
