The 26th Asian Athletics Championships are set to begin on May 27 in Gumi, South Korea, and the Sri Lanka national athletics team is scheduled to depart the country on May 24 to participate in the prestigious event.
Representing Sri Lanka will be a 20-member squad comprising 13 male athletes and 7 female athletes. This year’s championship will feature competitors from 43 Asian countries, highlighting the significance and scale of the event.
Leading the Sri Lankan men's team will be Sumedha Ranasinghe, who represented the country in javelin throw at the 2016 Rio Olympics. The women’s team will be captained by Nadeesha Dilhanie Lekamge, also a top javelin thrower.
At the previous 25th Asian Athletics Championships, Sri Lanka achieved a historic milestone by winning its highest-ever medal tally in the history of the event. The team secured 2 gold medals, 3 silver medals, and 3 bronze medals, finishing 4th overall in the medal standings. Moreover, Sri Lankan athletes also set 5 new national records during that tournament.
