The 26th Asian Athletics Championships kicked off yesterday (27th) in Gumi, South Korea, with Sri Lankan athletes delivering impressive performances.
Nadeesha Ramanayake, Kalinga Kumarage, and Lasantha Arthavidu qualified for the finals in their respective events, marking a strong start for the Sri Lankan team. Additionally, Chamod Yodhasinghe advanced to the semi-finals of the men’s 100m sprint.
In the women’s 400m heats held yesterday morning, Nadeesha Ramanayake clocked 53.77 seconds to finish third and qualify for the final, which is scheduled for today (28th) at 2:20 PM Sri Lanka time.
Lasantha Arthavidu comfortably cleared 2.10 meters in his first attempt in the high jump event, securing a place in the final, which will be held tomorrow (29th) at 2:10 PM SL time.
Meanwhile, Kalinga Kumarage advanced from the 400m heats with a time of 46.77 seconds. He improved in the semi-finals with an impressive 45.74-second finish, earning a spot in the final.
Aruna Darshana finished the 400m heats in 48.10 seconds, placing sixth in his heat, while Nishendra Fernando, competing in the women’s 400m, clocked 53.81 seconds to secure fourth place in her heat. Unfortunately, neither athlete advanced to the next round.
Chamod Yodhasinghe won his 100m heat in 10.40 seconds, qualifying for the final round and showcasing his sprinting prowess.
However, Sri Lanka's top sprinter Yupun Abeykoon, though present at the championship, did not compete in the 100m event. Reports confirm that he will only take part in the 200m and 4x100m relay events.
In the women’s 400m hurdles final, Nadeesha Lekamge finished in 5th place, putting on a commendable performance.
