The first Test match of the Bangladesh cricket team’s tour of Sri Lanka is scheduled to begin tomorrow (17th) at 10:00 AM at the Galle International Cricket Stadium.

This series also marks the commencement of the 2025–2027 ICC World Test Championship. Adding to its significance, the recently revised ICC rules and playing conditions will be implemented starting from this series.

Notably, this match will also be the final Test appearance of Angelo Mathews, one of Sri Lanka’s finest Test cricketers. At 38 years old, Mathews has played 118 Test matches, scoring 5,916 runs with 16 centuries and 45 half-centuries.

The Sri Lanka squad for this match features six newcomers, highlighting a fresh direction for the national team. Off-spinner Akila Dananjaya has also returned to the squad. With opener Dimuth Karunaratne not included, left-handed opener Oshada Fernando has been called up.

Several players—Sadeera Samarawickrama, Jeffrey Vandersay, Nishan Peiris, and Vishwa Fernando—have been omitted, while new players Lahiru Udara, Sonal Dinusha, Pasindu Suriyabandara, Pawan Rathnayake, and Tharindu Rathnayake have been included. Ishitha Wijesundara replaces Lahiru Kumara, who is out due to injury.

Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have faced each other in 26 Test matches, with Sri Lanka winning 20, Bangladesh securing 1 win, and 5 matches ending in draws.
